A Q&A with Katie Dubow: Garden Media Group’s Trends

A guide for professionals on what the leading garden PR firm sees coming in 2026.

With the launch of our 2026 Garden Trends Report, our newest hire, Hope Thatcher, sat down with Katie Dubow, president of Garden Media Group, to dig into what the trends mean, why they matter, and how the industry can leverage them to stay ahead.

Garden Media is a PR and marketing firm specializing in the green industry. We help brands tell their stories, reach new audiences, and drive sales through media, content, and strategy. Our clients include growers, breeders, garden centers, landscape companies, and allied businesses.

We also write the trends! Our Garden Trends Report is an annual forecast of cultural, consumer, and business shifts that will impact the horticulture industry. We’ve been identifying and forecasting trends for 25 years. I still remember many late nights in my mom’s home office, watching her pore over slides before a big presentation. Those early memories shaped how seriously I take this work today.

A Letter to My Mother

As we enter this new decade, Garden Media Group ushers in the biggest change in our history.

On January 1, 2020 I purchased Garden Media from my mom, Suzi McCoy, and am taking over as owner and president.

While my brain swirls with inspiration and desires for the company, I’d like to take this time to shine a light on Suzi, and thank her, my best friend, biggest supporter, and mother, for her endless passion – or enSuziasm – for me and for Garden Media. Mamma, there is no one like you!

Social Network – Manage Your Garden the Right Way

As we continue to dive into Nature’s Rx for Mental Wellness, the theme for the 2018 Garden Trends Report, we start to look more to how we can create spaces that help ease our minds.

Imagine walking through a forest and you’ll see that almost every bit of soil is covered with interlocking plants. Trees are covered with moss; the ground is covered with leaves, debris, grasses and moss.

Write it Right: Why Plagiarism is a Problem for PR Pros (And How to Combat It)

With the recent backlash about plagiarism in the news, we thought we’d address the importance of honesty, whether in PR, politics or life.

We’ve talked about honesty in PR. Lying about a crisis or about your brand will send your reputation plummeting when the public finds out.

Why Honesty is the Best Policy When it Comes to Public Relations

On Saturday, Feb. 7, Brian Williams, renowned NBC Nightly News anchor said, “…it has become painfully apparent to me that I am presently too much a part of the news, due to my actions.” And this distraction has led to his stepping aside from his post at the Nightly News.

10 Questions to Ask Before Hiring a PR Firm

Working with professional public relations consultants reflects a significant increase in the communications of any organization. In today’s media rich environment, more and more companies are turning to public relations firms for assistance in building their company’s reputation, increasing brand recognition, and creating and promoting various marketing projects.

Lessons from Edward Bernays Most Notable Public Relations Campaigns

When you hear or see a creative public relations campaign, it grabs hold of you immediately. Some can move you to laugh or tears or inspire action. Powerful campaigns can change the public’s perception seemingly overnight about a brand, product, or social movement.

Nobody understood this more than the father of public relations, Edward L Bernays. As blogged about previously, the father of spin understood that it was the combination of the news, not advertising, and the manipulation of people’s unconscious through endorsements by doctors, celebrities, and other experts that truly made the difference.

How to write a mission statement for the lawn & garden industry

It seems like a simple question. What does my business do? This is the stuff of which mission statements are made. So why is this simple question seem like mission impossible?

I think because we aren’t really clear on what it is supposed to say. We get it confused with our vision – which is what we want our business “to be”. We get hung up on using just the right words or words that are way too fancy. And we think it is supposed to sound like something someone who has an MBA has written.

The Father of Spin or… The Birth of Public Relations

Today, few people outside the public relations (or inside for that matter) profession recognize the name of Edward L. Bernays, although he was named one of the 100 most influential Americans of the 20th century by Life magazine.

Public Relations is a 20th century phenomenon, and Bernays — widely eulogized as the “father of public relations” — played a major role in defining the industry’s philosophy and methods.

Recipe for a Great Tasting Brand: It’s More than the Frosting

If you want to serve the most delicious cake, you need to carefully pick the right ingredients – and worry about the frosting last.

The same is true when building your brand.  We at the Garden Media Group know it’s important not to be too concerned with the frosting – how you look on the outside. Fancy logos, slick marketing messages, lots of “friends” are all just frosting on the cake.
