Kids Garden Month: Let’s Grow Together!
An annual celebration of kids and gardening promotes community and environmental engagement
April is the perfect time to celebrate everything growing in the garden, including kids! Each year, national nonprofit KidsGardening hosts a Kids Garden Month contest, lifting up young gardeners and the many positive contributions they have within their families, schools, and communities.
This year’s Kids Garden Month theme is “Let’s Grow Together!” Kids are invited to submit entries that showcase how they connect with others through gardening. Entries can be individual or group submissions and include pictures, videos, songs, dances, poems, art, crafts – anything demonstrating how they enjoy gardening with friends, family, school, or community.
“Kids Garden Month is a great way to get kids excited about the meaningful impact they make through gardening,” said Em Shipman, executive director of KidsGardening. “Not only is gardening fun, it also offers kids a chance to get outside, move their bodies, engage with their community, and be empowered to realize their impact on the world around them.
The contest runs from April 1-30, 2023. With support from Kids Garden Month sponsor, Mrs. Meyer’s Clean Day, KidsGardening will choose among their favorite entries each week to win a prize. So early entries are encouraged! The four weekly winners will be awarded seed packets, Mrs. Meyer's Clean Day garden-inspired homecare products, and more. At the end of the contest, ten grand prize winners will be chosen, five individual entries receiving a $100 prize, and five group entries receiving $500.
Kids and groups can enter the contest by submitting their entries through the website.
"Whether they realize it or not, gardening has a tremendously positive impact on kids!” exclaims Shipman. “More than anything, gardening grows kids who feel more connected to themselves, their food, their communities, and the natural world around them. We love being able to celebrate all of the amazing kid gardeners during Kids Garden Month!”"
The National Gardening Association established Kids Gardening Month in 1982 to encourage children to get involved in gardening and celebrate the positive impact that gardening can have on their development. The event has since grown in popularity and is now celebrated by schools, community organizations, and families across the United States every April.
